Not every validated keyword will be useful.

You may find that a keyword has plenty of searches, but very high competition. Or perhaps it describes your product well, but doesn't attract the shoppers you're hoping to reach.

That's where the Refine step comes in.

Let’s say you have validated the keyword “necklace.” Shoppers are searching for it, yes. But then you look at the Competition stat. Over three million Etsy listings have it. You realize it will be difficult to rank high enough to be found in search for “necklace.”

So what next?

Scroll down its page in Keyword Tool to the Related Keywords table. Here you'll find other keywords shoppers are using that relate to your original search.

Instead of stopping at “necklace”, you might discover:

  • “silver necklace”
  • “name necklace”
  • “initial necklace”

Now it's time to use what you learned in the previous lesson.

As you compare these keywords, ask yourself:

  • Is it relevant?
  • Is it searched?
  • Is it achievable?
  • Does it match what shoppers expect to find?

You're not looking for a perfect score. You're simply looking for a better opportunity.
Sometimes a slightly more specific keyword gives you a much better chance of being found by the shoppers you're trying to reach.

The Related Keywords table in Keyword Tool has lots of features to explore! Click any header to sort the data by that column.

Try sorting by “Search Trend” to see what's been popular recently. Or “Keyword Difficulty” to help identify keywords that may be easier to target.

Discover whether one keyword offers a better opportunity than another. Keep in mind, you’re still not looking for the perfect keyword yet. For now, focus on finding keywords that give your listing a realistic chance of being found by your target market. That is, shoppers who want to buy your product.

ACTION STEP

Choose one of your validated keywords and explore the Related Keywords table in Keyword Tool.

Can you find alternatives that are more relevant, more achievable, or show stronger purchase intent?

Make a list of the ones that offer the most opportunity.

Great!

You've refined your keyword list into stronger opportunities.
