Crafting Compelling Listing Descriptions

Welcome to day nine of our 10-day program! We’ve already covered so many different aspects of setting up an Etsy shop and listings, and we hope that you’ve learned a lot so far.

Why Listing Descriptions Matter

Today, we are covering listing descriptions. Here, sellers have the opportunity to really tell their item’s story, what inspired them to create it, their creative process, and much more. Please note that Etsy does not use listing descriptions during the query-matching phase of ranking. Because of this, we do not recommend “stuffing” them with keywords.

Tips for Writing Great Descriptions

Instead, use the description space to tell each item’s story. Etsy offers some tips in its 5 Tips for Writing Listing Descriptions article. While Etsy doesn’t use the keywords within descriptions for the query-matching phase, it does use them for the personalization level of ranking. This means that giving specific details about your item, such as style, uses, or colors, can help Etsy match your listing with shoppers who previously searched for (or bought!) items that share the same qualities. In addition to this, we recommend adding details such as processing times, shipping times, and return policies to your listings’ descriptions

If you’re selling digital items, have a bullet-pointed list of which sizes or ratios you offer for each one. For jewelry and clothing, add care instructions or safety warnings. 

💡 Think of your description as the “box” your product comes in. It should include information about the item’s material, uses, colors, weight, and more. Don’t forget to put your brand’s personal style and phrasing into this area!
